[25032013] - Fuselage

Got to attach the wings and tail to something ....

25/03/2013 - SNOW SNOW SNOW IN MARCH....and some wing drilling !

So here is my list again

bullet

Drill and ream rear spar to correct size

bullet

Drill and ream fuel tank mount

bullet

Fit wing flashings and underside skin holes

bullet

Drill and shape holes for flap rods

bullet

File flap skin edge to make sure of clearance against fuselage once painted

The first two entries are coloured green as these are the list items I managed to complete today.  The first job is to create some blocks that will hold the drill perpendicular so the hole is straight.  They are 1" blocks.

from the initial #40 pilot hole I drilled to #12, #C, #N and then finished with a slightly undersized reamer for the bolt

I used the previous drill to hold the pieces together as well as a narrow clamp, and the next sized drill just simply pushed the drill out as it drills

Next size up, make sure you clamp the block well, as sometimes the drills can bite a little

The drilled hole, and then reaming.  I used the #N drilling guide and reamed it in the milling machine

Bolt in place and drill the other wing !

With that done I turned to drilling the fuel tank attach bracket.  Again a block is required to drill the 1/4" hole.

The sequence will be #30, #12, #C and then a slightly undersize reamer

The challenge is with the steel bracket that already has a slot in it and you need to find the middle of that slot as well as make sure for edge clearance on the aluminium angle.

I drilled a 1/4" hole into the drill guide and then used the bushing I will use for drilling the elevator horns on the tail.  The bushing slid into the block and I just left it 1/8" proud to fit into the slot.  (Mike Bullocks idea and it works very well).

Clamped into place and drilled with #30.  A lot of people use an angle drill here, but I found with a 6" drill I could drill it straight from the steep bracket side.

The rest of the drilling / reaming is done from the leading edge side.  Very pleased with the results
